No Surprise Medical Bills

As of January 1, 2022, new legislation is in effect requiring healthcare providers to offer an estimate of treatment costs for patients who are uninsured or not using insurance benefits. This is known as a Good Faith Estimate.

Congress recently enacted the “No Surprises Act,” which also took effect on January 1, 2022. This act introduces new federal protections against surprise medical bills, particularly affecting individuals seeking ADHD therapy, autism therapy, or other forms of mental health support, who may inadvertently receive care from out-of-network providers. The purpose of this act is to enhance cost transparency and protect clients from unexpected billing, especially within marginalized communities.

According to the new law, state-licensed or certified healthcare providers must provide a Good Faith Estimate of healthcare charges to every new and continuing client who is either uninsured or not planning to submit a claim to their insurance for the healthcare services they require, such as individual therapy, group therapy, or telehealth therapy. There are specific rules regarding the necessary information in that estimate and the timeline for its delivery. If you are a current or new client opting for self-pay services, we will provide this cost estimate detailing an estimated annual cost range for the services you seek.

Upon scheduling with a provider, you will be informed of the billing rates and your costs. At Mayhem and Tranquility, we are committed to transparency regarding the costs of the services we agree on together, including trauma-informed care tailored for Neurodivergent individuals and the LGBTQIA+ community. If you have any questions about your costs, billing, or services, please feel free to reach out to your therapist or contact us at mayhemandtranquility@gmail.com.
